Subarachnoid Hemorrhage


What is subarachnoid hemorrhage?

It is a type of stroke and the commonest cause is trauma. Non-traumatic SAH is almost always due to rupture of a berry aneurysm. An aneurysm is ballooning of the artery in the brain. Rupture of the aneurysm results in bleeding into the space between brain and skull.

What are the symptoms?

  • Sudden worst headache of life
  • Associated neck or back pain
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Decreased responsiveness or loss of consciousness
  • Dizziness
  • Seizures

How is it diagnosed?

  • CT scan and CT angiography
  • Lumbar puncture and CSF analysis
  • MRI and MR angiography
  • DSA to know the cause of SAH
