What is PELD?
PELD is a typically minimally invasive spine surgery for lumbar disc prolapse.
What is a disc prolapse?
A disc prolapse occurs when the outer fibers of the intervertebral disc are damaged and the inner soft material called nucleus ruptures out. This presses the surrounding neural structures resulting in symptoms.
When is it done?
It is indicated for both mild or severe disc prolapse.
How is it done?
The disc prolapse can be removed through a 6 mm cannula with the help of a special endoscope and a 3 mm forceps. A high definition camera, laser and radiofrequency are very helpful.
Whether any anesthesia is required?
The surgery is performed under local anesthesia.
How long would the surgery last?
It lasts usually up to one hour.
How long one should stay in hospital?
One can walk three hours after surgery and need to stay overnight in the hospital.
How big would be the incision?
The surgical incision would be small that requires no stitch. Only a Band-Aid would suffice.
