What is subarachnoid hemorrhage?
It is a type of stroke and the commonest cause is trauma. Non-traumatic SAH is almost always due to rupture of a berry aneurysm. An aneurysm is ballooning of the artery in the brain. Rupture of the aneurysm results in bleeding into the space between brain and skull.
What are the symptoms?
- Sudden worst headache of life
- Associated neck or back pain
- Nausea and vomiting
- Decreased responsiveness or loss of consciousness
- Dizziness
- Seizures
How is it diagnosed?
- CT scan and CT angiography
- Lumbar puncture and CSF analysis
- MRI and MR angiography
- DSA to know the cause of SAH
