PROBLEMS FOLLOWING HEAD INJURIES
There are three types of problems that can occur after head injuries.
1.Physical
2.Cognitive
3.Emotional/Behavioral
It is not possible to tell early on which specific problem a person will have after a head injury. These problems will improve as the person recovers but may take months. With severe head injuries it may take years.
The brain is divided into two halves. The left half controls movements and sensation in the right side of the body and the right half controls the movements and sensation on the left side. Thus the damage to right side of the brain causes movement problems on the left side of the left side of the body. The left-brain is also responsible for verbal and logical functions including language and memory and the right half is responsible for expressing and understanding emotions.
PHYSICAL PROBLEMS: Though most people following head injuries are able to walk, the physical difficulties do not prevent a return to independent living, including work and driving. Co ordination is reduced and these people may have problems with balance. They may not be able to play sports as before. They may fatigue easily.
COGNITIVE PROBLEMS: Thinking skills would be hampered and there may be difficulty in paying attention and in concentrating. There may be a generalized slowing in thinking process. There will be confusion when normal routines are changed. Speech and language problems are very common.
EMOTIONAL PROBLEMS: Cognitive problems may lead to emotional changes resulting in frustration. Loss of job, change in family role and needing supervision all the time will result in depression. Restlessness, mood swings, irritability, lack of motivation and lethargy are common.
Fortunately with rehabilitation, training, therapy and other supports one can overcome these problems.
